All are welcome to our programme celebrating older people in the Albert-Eden local board area. Our themes for programming are community, connection, contribution.
Events will take place between 23 September to 6 October 2024.
All events are FREE to attend, but some may require registration.

From The Heart - Exhibition
From The Heart is an exhibition which showcases a range of member’s artworks created at The Ōwairaka Community Club. The works are for sale with all the proceeds going to the artists. The exhibition takes place during Mental Health Awareness Week; the theme for this year is Community is… what we create together.
The Ōwairaka Community Club provides a non-clinical, creative space for adults with lived experience of mental health issues. It is a safe and inclusive space where members are encouraged to explore their own creativity, as a way to help maintain and enhance their well-being. This space also provides a sense of community by encouraging meaningful social connection amongst members and kaimahi.
Ōwairaka Community Club operates in the back rooms of the Mt Albert Methodist Church at 831 New North Road but access is from Alexis Avenue.

Chair Yoga
Join us in the comfortable and inviting Mt Albert Library space for a FREE session of chair yoga led by Tracy. Stretch and activate your muscles with low-impact exercises suitable for everyone, then connect for some kōrero over delicious kai afterward.

Creative Ageing Acitvities Day
All welcome to a fun day hosted by the Epsom Chinese Association. Including performances to celebrate the achievements of those who have been through the regular physical activity programme on Wednesdays. There will be lucky draws and shared food for all. Older people and community members are very welcome to attend!

Living Library: Borrow a Climate Action Enthusiast!
Seniors from the Albert-Eden community sit down in the Mt Albert space and welcome anyone with a passion or interest in climate action to have a cup of tea and a chat.

Celebration of International Day of Older Persons
Join Shanti Niwas for a session celebrating older members of our community.
Shanti Niwas work with senior members every week day. At this celebration will celebrate their contribution to the community, organize a health promotion activity, and exchange wisdoms, to name a few.

Bridging Generations - The Sandringham Stories
A project celebrating International Day of Older Persons, where local media and journalism students from MAGS will interview and document the life stories of some of our older community members. These interviews will explore their childhoods, careers, and life experiences, highlighting the diversity and richness of our community.
The project will produce vibrant portraits and videos showcasing the unique characters and energy of the participants, which will be displayed in a community exhibition.

Give your broken consumer items a chance at new life by bringing them to our Repair Cafe! Our volunteer repairers will do their best to help fix your items and keep them out of landfill for longer. Positive Ageing
Positive Ageing refers to maintaining a happy lifestyle, staying healthy, positive attitude and feel good about themselves throughout their lives as they age.
Our activities include universal prayer, thought of the day, Exercise approved by the balanced trainer programme, discussion on any topic, singing, dances, games, speech by our social worker etc
We serve morning tea with snacks after exercise and a healthy vegetarian meal after the event is over every activity day.

Mine, Theirs, and Yours
A poetry reading, open mic and morning tea hosted by Auckland Writers’ Festival poet Tim Heath. Tim Heath writes poetry and, occasionally, gets it published. He published a memoir “The Accidental Teacher” in 2021 and a poetry collection, “Not as The Crow Flies”, in 2018. Tim writes about everyday life and believes poetry should be straightforward, even funny.
Bring your own poems to share, or just come to listen. Morning tea provided
Chair Yoga & Spin Poi
Come join for an enjoyable with two experts in movement and agility. Tracy of Diversity Yoga will lead a session of chair yoga, and Kate Riegle van West of SpinPoi will lead a spin-poi session. Morning tea will be provided in the middle of the session to keep your energy up!

Headway IDOP Tai Chi in the Park
Tai Chi in the Park with our community to celebrate IDOP. Join us for Tai Chi for Health which is accessible to everyone of all ages and abilities and especially appropriate for our elders in the community. Pauline Wood, qualified OT and Tai Chi for Health practitioner, will lead the session in the park with the scout hall as a backup in bad weather. Celebrate IDOP with us with morning tea and spot prizes. Everyone is welcome – come and move your body with our wonderful community.
